Q: How do I get the bell off of the box?
A: Use a small hex wrench to loosen the bolt on top of the bell. After a couple of turns, the steel strap should be slack enough to allow you to push the cardboard tube inside the box out.
Q: My bell has stopped ringing. Just "thuds".
A: The four most common issues causing this is
- Something such as your grip, bar tape, even your finger is touching the dome preventing the dome from resonating
- The center bolt is too tight. Bolt should be snug, but not to max. torque. Try using some blue loctite if it comes loose over time.
- The third issue is when the hammer is at rest, the hammer should not be touching the dome. At rest the hammer should be fully off the dome. If the striker is touching the dome, gently bend it back.
- The bell does require a real push of the hammer to ring well; sometimes a light flick will result in a "dink" or "thud"
Q: How should I orientate the bell on my bars?
A. Usually your thumb can comfortably operate the bell with the lever tip pointing down, facing the rider, or facing forward. if it is facing down or forward, you are less likely to accidentally poke yourself in an emergency ring. In an emergency though, it is probably safer to pay attention to stopping or steering than ringing a bell.
When installing on the 31.8mm bulge of your handlebar, you really need to loosen the bolt to the max, so the plate is close to falling off, otherwise it will be challenging to stick the ends of the steel strap into the openings in the plate. You may also want to practice installing the strap to the bell to see how it feels, since when you are actually installing it you can't see the plate. Some people have luck removing the plate from the dome, installing it on the bar, then try to screw the dome onto the plate.
